US government pushes New Deal to prohibit illegal immigrants from applying for asylum
The Beijing Newsletter (trainee reporter Yu Yin) According to Reuters news, the US government announced the New Deal yesterday (November 8) local time, prohibiting illegal immigrants from the southern border of the United States to seek asylum.
Reuters expects this new move will drastically reduce asylum applications.
Immigrant advocates condemned the above new policy, saying it violated existing US laws. Under US law, immigrants seeking to avoid persecution or violence in their country of origin have the right to apply for asylum in the United States, regardless of the legality of their entry.
At a press conference held on the 8th, a US official said that after the New Deal was fully implemented, only immigrants who submitted applications at the official port of entry could apply for asylum.
